Camaradas de Conjunto, it's that time of year again when I begin formulating the vision and line-up for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's 33rd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio 2014 which will be held from May 15-18 at the Guadalupe Theatre and Rosedale Park. Please put the dates in your calendar and send me your suggestions and recommendations as to who you think are the best Conjuntos performing today, and who you think should definitely perform at next year's Tejano Conjunto Festival (music links and videos are welcome). De antemano, gracias por su apoyo y recomendaciones, and may you and your familia have a safe, healthy and happy jaladay season. Juan

FRUTTY VILLARREAL!! Old skool style, makes the people dance. Wears his suit like Ruben Vela and Naranjo. Finally saw him live in San Bene this past year and met him. Such a dedicated man to conjunto and south texas. Puro Corpitos.
You can prob get a hold of Joe Sanchez or Ramon or Rogelio from the Narcisso Cultural Center for his contact info.
If you have a Corpitos night, this dude should def be included.

Hola Juan

First of all thanks for asking for our input for the festival line-up. I am very happy that you have selected groups that I personally have recommended and others members suggestions here from this forum.  I to would love to see Frutty Villareal I think he would be an awesome Conjunto to perform at the festival.

These next two groups have been playing around the state for awhile now and deserve their moment on the Rosedale stage IMHO.  The first group is from the Corpus Christi area Los Arroyos Del Rio they are a family based Conjunto and they have a very lively sound and put on a great show.  Please seriously consider this Conjunto for this years TCF.

The second group is out of Snyder, Texas Conjunto Mi Gusto. They are Reyes forum members CarlosJesus51 and they have gone several years to the festival as fans but they need their moment to shine. They have a young and prolific accordionist Jordan Rodriguez that has a very lively progressive style that will bring some excitement to this years festival.

My other recommendations would be in no particular order
La Naturaleza
Conjunto Romo
Randy Garcia and Conjunto Estrella
Percy Cardona
Flavio Longoria y Los Conjunto Kings
Los Padrinos
Conjunto Los Pinkys
Baraja De Oro
Los D Boys
Conjunto Califas
Ricky Naranjo Y Los Gamblers
Chano Cadena

Can't wait till May!!!

See you all at Rosedale!!!

Folks,
I'm thinking of coming from the United Kingdom for this festival.  I have a few questions and would be grateful for any help.

1. This forum indicates that the festival is from the 15th-18th May.  But the information on the http://www.guadalupeculturalarts.org website states 14th-18th May.  Which dates are correct?
2. The festival sites are the Guadaloupe Theatre and Rosedale Park.  Looking at a map these seem to be about 5 miles apart.  Is there good public transport between the 2 venues?
3. Can you buy a single ticket which gives entry to all the events at the festival?  I cannot find any information about the ticketing arrangements.
4. Does the festival have its own website?

Grateful for any information,
Thanks
JBW

The Guadalupe website is the one you want to keep your eye on.  They will post more specific details about the event as time goes on and plans are confirmed.  We went last year for the first time and enjoyed it very much.  An all-event ticket was available last year, and is your best bet.  The major concerts were at the Park on Saturday & Sunday.  I believe the Thursday event is a seniors dance only during the day, and Friday's event was a New Directions Concert at the Center (in the evening only).  We rented a vehicle, and found that convenient.  Not sure about public transportation.  Good luck, and welcome.

Carmark 13, many thanks for info - much appreciated.
Seems like the main events are at the park - so probably makes sense to find a hotel in that area.

Saludos Camaradas de Conjunto: Once again, gracias to all for your recommendations. I have the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's 33rd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio 2014 completely booked. I'm just waiting on approval from the Guadalupe to release the schedule. This, hopefully, will happen within the next week or so. As to your questions jbw, this year's festival will take place from May 14-18. The Free Seniors Conjunto Dance will take place on Wednesday, May 14, 10am-12noon at the Guadalupe Theater. At this point, there is nothing scheduled for Thursday, May 15, though this may change. From Friday, May 16 through Sunday May 18, the festival will be at Rosedale Park. You can purchase an All Events 3-Day Pass for the park, though they're not available yet. The festival doesn't have its own website but all of the information will be up at the Guadalupe's website at http://www.guadalupeculturalarts.org when everything is finalized. Thanks for your help with the info carmark 13.

Right now we're looking for talented visual artists and graphic designers to participate in the 33rd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival Poster Contest 2014. The Overall Winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize and the winning design will become the official poster for this year's Tejano Conjunto Festival and grace the cover of the TCF Magazine, t-shirts, press, etc. Deadline for submission is February 28. Prizes will also be given in the Middle, High School, College Level and Open categories. For the complete Rules & Guidelines, go to http://www.guadalupeculturalarts.org/tejano-conjunto-poster-contest/ Por favor spread the palabra to your friends and interested visual artists and graphic designers. Gracias. Juan

See below for the complete schedule of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's 33rd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio 2014 which will be held from May 14-18 at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park.

Camaradas de Conjunto: I had to make some tough decisions for this year's musical line-up for the 33rd Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival. Over 160 different conjuntos were recommended this year, and I was able to hire 24 bands, plus 6 individual special presentations. This year's line-up features a performance by Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers, Shawn Sahm and the Texas Tornados; plus the return of 5 Conjunto Music Hall of Famers and some of the most popular conjuntos performing today; and 8 bands that have never performed at the festival. The Conjunto Fest also features a Free Seniors Conjunto Dance, the TCF Poster Contest, Inductions into the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame, the Conjunto Student Showcase, an Austin Conjunto Showcase, publication of the TCF Magazine, Workshops for the Button Accordion & Bajo Sexto, and plenty of food and beverage booths, dancing and fun for the entire family. Please spread the palabra and the schedule, and I hope to see you at this year's Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio. Gracias. Juan

FANtastic lineup! Lots of heavy hitters mixed in with up and coming groups. There is a little something for everyone. Probably the most balanced lineup ever put together for the festival. [cool]

Juan, on behalf of Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia, and I think I speak for the rest of the Austin conjuntos, we're honored to be a part of the San Anto Conjunto fest 2014.  So stoked about playing out there, and also to catching up with old conjunto friends and making new conjunto friends, all under one lovely tent of conjunto grooviness.  God bless y Muchisimas gracias!

Yeah, great line-up as always.  Lots of bands I've never heard and some of my favorites.

Thanks for all the hard work for so many years.  You have done more to promote & preserve conjunto than anyone else and it seems to be getting stronger, especially among younger & more diverse fans.  Still wish you would get on stage with your own band.

I believe David (Lonestar) will be staying at Days Inn Medical Center.  Clean, quite, several restaurants within walking distance, inexpensive, convenient to festival.  My wife & I stay there too.  Here's a link:

Also, its been years since visiting San Antonio....any places recommended for breakfast or lunch while in San Antos? What food booths will be at the festival, usually? Bud Light y Miller o solamente Bud Light. Im looking forward to seeing as many Reyes members possible at the TCF. I remember a awesome steak ranch (grew their own cattle there), leaving town on the way to Laredo......they had the different cattle brands hanging on the walls.

I was thinking of signing up for the accordion workshop on the Saturday morning.
Thing is, I'm coming from UK so am not intending to bring my accordion with me.
If I didn't have my accordion is it worthwhile attending the workshop?  Or is that just plain stupid?
Any thoughts, folks?

Yeah John, no worries.  I came down from Michigan last year and Joel Guzman & Hohner provided several boxes for the class.  Some locals brought their own, but if it was like last year, there was some there for use.  Was a real good time too.......very nice atmosphere.  Great job Juan!  Hope to be back soon.......

I'm also still looking for some literature on conjunto music for possible publication in this year's TCF magazine. Write and e-mail me your favorite conjunto story, poem, article (scholarly or other), interview, etc., to juantejeda@sbcglobal.net  Deadline for submission is April 10. This year I am not staying at the Days Inn North West Medical Center.  I am staying at a Wyndham Resort on the River Walk.  My wife is 5 months pregnant with our little boy and she probably will not be attending the festival as much this year.  So she wanted to go shopping and enjoy the other things San Antonio has to offer.

I do recommend the Days in North West Medical center though it offers a good price with convenient dinning options and 5 minutes from Rosedale.

It works well for me cause I just need a place to sleep so I am not really concerned about a fancy pricey room.

Hope to see you in May.

Lonestar,
thanks for info.  I've booked into a River Walk hotel myself - I'm coming for a couple of days before the festival so decided to be central so as to enjoy the attractions of the centre of town.  Will be relying on buses/taxis to get me to and from Rosedale Park.

I'm really looking forward to this whole thing.

Just for info for other folks, I signed up for the Accordion and Bajo Sexto workshop and I've just noticed in the small print that "Instruments will not be provided".  Oh well, I'm sure I'll still learn a lot without an accordion.  Or…... a great excuse to buy an accordion when I'm in San Antonio.  Sorted.

WHO'S READY FOR CONJUNTO FEST?!?!?!  Hello fellow forum members, I haven't been on in a while but I'm pretty excited and bummed out about this weekend..This will be my first Conjunto Fest to attend and i've got a couple gigs this weekend!! GRRRR!! I'll be there Sunday to catch the tail end, but I wanted to know if any of the groups performing at Rosedale will be performing at any local venues here in San Antonio? There are a few clubs in town and that would be cool to check y'all out at night..can anyone from the groups performing let us know if y'all are playing anywhere at night this weekend? I'm sure i'm not the only forum member that would like to know!! To all the groups performing, Good Luck and have a great time showing us your talent!! Can't wait to see y'all!! BTW, is there gonna be a hang out spot at the park to meet & greet forum members? I think that would be nice!!

The hang out spot is the Hohner booth- to sample instruments, meet musicians, fans & Reyes Forum people.  Also, the stage area and the booths where bands sell CDs, pose for pictures, sign autographs, etc.  The entire park is a happening place though, cool people everywhere, especially on the dance floor.
