I would highly recommend a Panther as well.  I myself am a proud owner of one, and it handles great!  And just to give you a little more reassurance, Panther's have been and still are used by artists such Albert Zamora and Sunny Sauceda.  What else needs to be said.(This is with understanding that the reeds have been modified of course)

Yeah man the panther..... Great beginning accordion. Much softer to open. Also the buttons are softer than a yinguie? or a rossetti.

Avenal is about 2 hours south of San Jose Bro.  We're just south west of I-5, 9 miles north of Highway 41.

Hi there, and greetings from England, U.K.

I have a Hohner Panther - original model, and it is an excellent accordion.  Have only been playing for about a year now (wished I started playing when I was younger as I've been a fan of texmex music since my teens). I have been told by an accordion tuner over here that it shares the same reeds as the Compadre and Corona II 3500 (made in China range).

It's not just for beginners, but long established musicians are also playing Panthers - see Eddie Lalo Torres playing at the Tejano Conjunto Festival 2013:

It's a shame texmex music is not popular here in the U.K. and we don't get any of the musicians come and play concerts here.  I did get a change to see Santiago Jimenez Jr play here in the '90's with Tish Hinojosa in London.

Best Regards,
Kimric

They are good workhorses if you get a good one, just make sure you try it out before you buy. I get a couple in every year at the shop that need the reed blocks remounted or some spot tuning. They play fine once they are squared away.
I agree that they have lighter key action and better bellows than most chinese accordions.
