Dear Reyes Members,

I'm sure by now you have heard of the exciting news of Apple's release of the new iPad 2. This is the perfect time to annouce the launch of the Hohner SqueezeBox Apps. Click on the link below for more info and make sure to download all five key combinations on the iTunes App Store. I want to thank Michael Eskin for this incredible collaboration and opportunity to bring this to you.

It's great to see that this is in collaboration with Michael Eskin who had the foresight to create the first diatonic accordion app. And what a great way to introduce the diatonic accordion to the masses and help cash strapped players buy an accordion in another key. (Of course the iPad 2 isn't chump change, either.)

Hopefully we'll start seeing more videos on YouTube showing the virtual Hohners in action.

Also, it appears that anyone who purchased (or received free) the original app for the iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad will get an automatic free update to the Hohner version.

Hi y'all,

What an adventure! I really appreciate all of Gilbert's hard work in making this happen so quickly.

Yes, anyone who bought the Accordion-GCF app for the iPad should see a free update tonight on iTunes to Hohner-GCF version 1.1. PocketBox app owners on the iPhone/iPod Touch should see a free update tonight to Hohner-Mini version 1.1. Both apps add the dry/wet reed feature.

I've also submitted version 1.2 of Hohner-Mini to Apple for review this morning. This version will allow you to select which subset of the 31-button keyboard you'd like to use on the 25-button display, with zero, one, and two button shift available. If I can ever figure out a truly useful way to allow realtime shifting while still having the app be playable, I'll implement it, but for now, this is a step in the right direction.

Cheers,

Michael

Holy Smokes! This looks fantastic.

Can anyone upload a live video of what it looks like playing the accordion on the iPad?

MtzGirl, there are a couple of videos on YouTube of members here playing the earlier version of the app before I integrated the final Hohner graphics and features. The version in the videos is played the same way and have the same sound and as the wet tuned reed option on the Hohner SqueezeBox version.

My favorite so far is:

I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of videos players will post on YouTube of the app. Gilbert I think has some great ideas on this.

Finally!  I downloaded all five apps and the are great!  This is exactly what i needed, a device that I can practice scales and take anywhere.  I was drinking coffee and playing with my apps at Starbucks this morning.  The good news, I did not bother anybody since I wore my headphones.  A few glances here and there to see what I was doing.  THE BEST APPS IN THE WORLD!  GO HOHNER!

One suggestion I've received is to add Bajo Sexto strumming to the app.

Not sure if you know this, and we should feature it on the app description, you can play music from your iTunes collection in the background while playing the app.

That way if you have a .mp3 recording of Bajo Sexto, you can just start it up using the iTunes app on the the iPad or iPhone before launching the Hohner. Put the music on loop mode and play away!  You can use the volume control to set the balance of the app against the background music.

Recording and playback adds a lot of complexity to the apps, eventually I'll get there.

My focus has been on making really good standalone instrument apps, given that this is a part-time thing I do on nights and weekends, I figure do one thing very well to start.

As I figure out how to add new features, you'll get the updates for free, forever...

This is AWESOME!  I love the first one, it's one of my most used apps on my iPad.  It's great for practicing songs when access to your accordion is not convenient, or you need to do so in silence.

Thanks Michael, Gilbert and Hohner!

You're most welcome!

So, I'd love to have some YouTube videos to post on the website as demos, let's see what y'all can do!
This version adds the ability to choose which area of the standard 31-button keyboard to show on the 25 buttons available.

I also added a workaround for an issue found with "stuck" buttons when sliding offscreen found on the 4th generation iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1. This doesn't seem to occur on the iPhone 3G, 3GS or iPod Touch first gen, and I've tested the fix on the devices I have. I'm heading over to the Apple Store to buy a 4th Gen iPod Touch to verify the fix.

Version 1.2 will be a free update to anyone who already has the app and should be available in less than a week, just check for updates in iTunes for your apps.

Cheers,

Michael

Now I have a question regarding this. Is there any way that you can hook this up to a sound system? That would be crazy if someone were to use this at a gig.....

Of course!

All you have to do is connect a stereo headphone to dual-RCA adapter cable from the headphone jack on the iPad to a line-in input on your PA or mixing board!

Based on the description, I guess you can.  I need an iPad now.  I'm glad I waited for version 2.

"Run the audio through your computer's speakers, a guitar amp, or your band's sound board."

One more thing, can you play along with iTunes?  I know the iPad has an iTunes app correct?

Think of it just like plugging in your laptop.

The easiest way is like Michael said, with an 1/8" to dual RCA cable.  But I would add that it would probably be better to buy 1/8" to dual 1/4" as this type of stereo input is more prevalent on mixers with a full channel strip.  You also want to make sure that it is in an "Insert Style" configuration so that the Left side goes to one jack and the right goes to the other jack.  Some of these just sum the signal and you lose your stereo field. (Not that it would make much difference with this app, but it's good to have anyway.)  Don't buy any of the "Monster" ones or over priced white ones that look like Apple type cables.  Buy a Hosa CMP-159 for like $7.  I have like 5 of these in all the places that I use them with my iPod or iPad.  I never had one fail.

An even better way is to plug the 1/8" to dual 1/4" cable into something with a balancing transformer like a DI box.  The Hosa cable is only 10ft, so plugging it into a DI box would allow you to turn the signal into a balanced Mic level signal that you can interface with any mic preamp on your mixer using mic cables (or through a snake, etc..).  There are a lot of good ones these days.  If you want to retain stereo separation on two channels, there is the Whirlwind PCDI, or the Radial JPC.  Both are fantastic professional grade built for interfacing consumer equipment (like iPods/iPads/Laptops) with professional equipment.  If you don't care about stereo and want it summed (correctly!) into a mono single channel, you can use something like the Whirlwind IsoPod or the Radial Pro AV1.

Just wanted to let everyone know I just tested the 1.2 update on a iPod Touch 4G I bought this afternoon specifically for app testing and everything looks good, the stuck note issue reported on the 4G is fixed by the update.

Once there are a lot of Android tablets out there running Honeycomb, it will make sense to port the apps to Android.  I'm primarily an iOS developer, but have started to play around with the Android development tools. It's a completely different world than what I'm used to, but Android would be the first platform for a port after iOS.

Huge change of plans for Hohner-Mini 1.2!

I figured out a simple way to do shifts on the fly. No need to go to the settings screen.

Here's the screen shots showing the new shift controls, first an image with the note guide off:

You just touch the shift buttons to select where you want to play on the keyboard.

Here's the keyboard during a push, note labels on, in all three positions:

Like I said, as I figure out ways to do things, I incorporate them into the next versions, I think this really brings the Hohner-Mini closer in functionality to the iPad version.

I submitted the new version to Apple for review tonight, if they hold to their usual schedule, look for the free update in about a week!

Sometimes I get lucky and Apple gets to the review much sooner, I sure hope that's the case this time!

Cheers and thanks,

Michael

Honestly, if you take a close look out there...no one can really match Apple's price on a fully functional tablet.  I'm not an an Apple fanboy or anything, and I don't want to start one of "those" debates.  (I use Mac OS X, Windows and Linux at home... all have their strengths and weaknesses).  But really the public perception that Apple is overpriced really does not apply to tablets.  They buy the most parts and have the most company branded retail outlets, therefore can price very aggressively.  (Whether or not the entire tablet market is over priced is certainly debatable).

Honestly, ask around anywhere... the tablet market is different from PCs.  Companies are having a hard time competing with Apple's pricing model for the iPad.  Not to mention (not counting some of it's syncing and computer dependency shortcomings) it is at the moment still the best software to user experience out there for a tablet.  Motorola Xoom and and Samsung have gotten close, but even they will tell you that they are not there YET.... much less at a $499 entry price point.

I'm looking forward to when Tablets that use Android (Honeycomb), WebOS, etc.. catch up because tight competition only means better and cheaper products for all of us...just like what is happening with handsets.

(edited:  Specifically, I meant the Honeycomb version of Android in the above sentence.)

Sorry to have to keep bringing it up, if you like the apps, please post ratings and reviews on the iTunes App Store!

There is nothing I'd like more than to work full time writing great fully-featured accordion apps for y'all instead of working on them only on weekends and nights.

Good reviews and ratings drive sales, so click on over to the iTunes App Store and get those reviews in!

In all truthfulness, I'm happy if the app sales simply pay for the equipment I have to buy to build and test them... :-)

Cheers and thanks,

Michael

Michael - thanks so much for these apps. I'm a beginner and love using them to practice.
Any chance of integrating a some kind of teaching element? I'm think like a combination of Señor Maestro and the app or a feature that let's the accordion play the chords, scales and progressions and then let's you play them right after. Does this make sense? I would pay extra for something like that!
Just my .02
Thanks again for developing these great apps!

Hi betochas,

Right now because this is something that I do only part time, I've deliberately kept things very simple, just trying to build good quality stand-alone virtual instruments, but integrating lessons would be something I'd love to add to all my apps in the future if I have the time and opportunity.

For now, at least you can play along with recordings already in your iTunes collection, just start the track playing (I like to put them on loop) then launch the SqueezeBox app.   While the app is running, you can then double click the home button to bring up the iPod controls.

This is how I was able to play along with a recording of marching drums for this demo "One-Man Pipe and Drum Corps" video I did of my "Bagpipes" app for the iPad, everything you are hearing is coming from the iPad's headphone jack through a small battery powered Roland amp.

I'd love to see someone post a video along the same lines as this, but with the Hohner SqueezeBox apps.

Searching around the forums here, I see another member has made available recordings of songs with the accordion and other instruments removed, you can load this on your iPad and play along on the apps:

http://www.puroalice.com/practice_room.htm

I'm having absolutely the most fun learning to play "La Muchachita de 15 Años" on the GCF app they've posted there. I downloaded both the track with and without the accordion and have them on my iPad.  I start up the track on the iPod app and set it to loop one track, then run the GCF app. This is just too cool.  When I've got the tune figured out, I can play the version with the accordion removed from the mix.

Mind you, while I enjoy it, I haven't played this style of music (I'm primarily a traditional Irish Anglo Concertina, flute and Uilleann pipes players), and have never played a 3-row instrument. I'll post a video when I have the tune figured out. :-)

Does anyone know of any other practice tracks like this? I'm sure you could do the same thing with "Band-in-a-Box" or similar auto-backup apps, they've become pretty sophisticated!

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks Michael this app is one of my Favorite. I think betochas idea would be great. I would be a lot easier to learn scales that way.
