I started playing accordion or at least attempting to play accordion in late 05, I didn't have a teacher or anyone to teach me so I was always looking for ways to learn, I bought a book and and was using it learn the scales but nothing made sense.  Coming of a family with no music background or musicians and no music knowledge myself, sometimes I felt like throwing in the towel.  For couple months I struggled but I was persistent, finally one day a did a search for accordions and this website came up.  This was the break that I needed. Thanks to everyone and all the good info in the forum I have advanced a lot in a year a half.

Actually I owe it to my wife who found this fantastic forum while searching on Ebay. She was looking for instructional video tapes for me on which to learn my new found passion, Conjunto music, and ReyesAccordions came out and she asked me to look it up. Well, after buying the tapes from Gilbert, among other items throughout the past years, I'm hooked on this forum! I really appreciate everyone efforts in helping and organizing it to the point it is today, it is truely a Godsend!. Thanks.

Well, for me it was kinda weird, I was looking for a website or pictures of Bajo Sextos, I typed in "Macias Bajo Sexto" and the only thing that would pop up would be http://www.reyesaccordions.com, I thought to myself, I'm looking for a Bajo not an Accordion, so I clicked away.  About a Year Later I was looking for Bajo Links again and once again http://www.reyesaccordion.com came up.  So I decided to check it out.  I should have clicked on it the first time but I didn't know any better, Now thanks to this great site, I've made alot of very talented friends, I have been able to learn a little accordion, and best of all, assist those that are starting on the bajo with one or two participations.

In 1998, I decided I was going to learn the accordion and went on a venture of looking for one online.  Through my quest, I did alot of research on brands and used boxes.  I stumbled through the Reyes website through my search and read the little that it had at the time.  Gilbert mentioned he was writing a book to teach how to play the accordion and I founded very interested that a good book was going to be available.  I visited a few times and signed the guestbook once in a while and then I forgot about the site.  Then, as I struggled on my learning, I remembered that the guy from the Reyes website was working on a book, so I went looking to see if the book had been finished and on sale.  Well, it wasn't, but Gilbert did gave us an update that he was still working on it and that he was to completed soon.  Shortly after, Gilbert informed the few people involved at the time that the website was going to start a forum.  The rest is history.  I get flabbergasted that a forum that started with a handful of members has grown to 3000+.  Truly amazing.  I don't think Gilbert could have written a much better book than this forum.  Congratulations Gilbert for a job well done.

Tu Amigo

BTW Gilbert, what happened to the book?  Just curious.

I have been researching accordeons for years and telling my wife and children how one day I was going to buy myself a nice box. I owned a kids piano style chinese box which was so not made for a big boy like me. Roughly a year ago in surfing the net I ran into the Reyes web page which I explored and realized that it had a forum. I read many of the posts as a guest but never really thought about joining since I didn't even own a button box at the time. It was not until January of this year that my wonderful wife, friends, and family held a surprise party for my 30ieth birthday and along with the party came a beautiful tiger striped Hohner Corona Classic in "Fa". They wrapped it up in a microwave box and I honestly thought it was a microwave since we were in need of one. It was hilarious. The very next day which was my real birthday, I went online and joined the forum. Since then my wife says that it's all I talk about. Long live Reyes accordeons!!!! Joining this forum was the best gift I've ever given myself.

I can't remember exactly how but i think I was researching the history of norteño music and I came across this site.  I thank God for leading me to this site, i have learned so much, especially since Potente and laredokid started posting videos.

I forgot to mention that I was really impressed that Gilbert was not biased towards any genre of our accordion music.

I have known Gilbert for many years and I'm amazed at this incredible community he started.  I was in a conference in Colorado and some students were writing papers about Reyes Accordions.  This community is making an impact in the music community.

Like everyone else, I stumbled across this site about 7 years ago when I was doing some research on Conjunto music. There just wasn't enough solid research on the topic, so I send Gilbert an email to get his insight. He was kind enough to reply and offer some words of advise. Since that time, I visited the site off and on just to see how he was doing. It wasn't until recently that I decided to register with the site so that I could view the videos that my good friend David Diaz started posting.

Here is a copy of Gilbert's email that I have kept for the past 7 years. It is dated July 6, 2000. There is some sage advice in there for all of us to follow!

Dear Javier,

I am delighted that you have this passion for this style of music.  It is important that you carry the torch.  More importantly, it is great to see that you are attending Texas A&M.  A lot of young people who seek the music world drop out of school.  All of their time and effort is put into the music without realizing that they need a solid education to be able to survive in our society today.  Like athletes, even the most talented don't get drafted to the NBA.  One thing for sure, this music that is in your heart you will be able to take to places that those that do not have an education are not able to reach.  I have been playing the college scene and the kids like our style.

So continue on this path and you will not regret your life as you look back and reflect on your journey.

You are right, there is little material on Conjunto.  I did read Manuel Peña's book and I think he did a great job.  I decided to write on this subject using my grandfather's eyes and experience.  I left out the intellectual garbage since I want all readers to understand this wonderful music that comes from el corazon.  My grandfather would always tell me that if the people do not understand your accordion playing, then they will reject you immediately.  I have seen many great accordion players who play faster and more complex than me -- and I consider myself fast.  The point is that they tend to try to impress other musicians.  The problem with this is that the audience does not understand it.  I overheard one lady say about this accordion player who was trying to do a Jimmy Hendrix on the accordion, "es puro mugrero."  So when it comes to writing, the same can be said.

Que siga la musica,

Gilbert

Great Thread!!!

One day I was at my friends (ConjuntoKing) house and his father was learning a polka from his neighbor Juan Salinas who is a master accordionist.  He was showing him how to play "Oralia" and I was watching them play and I thought to myself I can do that.  So he got out his other old beat up white Corona II and started to show me how.  I learned it very fast and as they say "The rest is history!!!"

I was searching for a better accordion to start learning with and I did a search for used accordions.

Just like everyone else http://www.reyesaccordions.com came up and I started looking at it daily for about three weeks. I didn't decided to become a member until after I saw Karlos and Gilbert at the Conjunto Festival.

Hello Everyone!!

Felices Acordes...

A couple of years ago a friend who was picking up on the guitar told me he was learning songs using tabs he got from web sites. Since my interest is the accordion, I did a search for accordion tabs , and one of the links that appeared was Reyes Accordions. This forum has proven to be an indispensable tool for anyone learning to play the accordion or bajo sexto/quinto.    Thanks Reyes Accordions.....

After visiting some concerts which Flaco Jimenez did over here in Holland with a great band and also visiting some Santiago Jimenez concerts....I fell in love with TexMex & Conjunto-music.....And: THE ACCORDION....!!

I played in several bands for over more then 40 years....But I always played the drums in the bands and I  always did a part of the singing....I never played another instrument.....After leaving my last band , I was looking for more information about TexMex & Conjunto-music on the Internet........

I bought myself two accordions, both Hohners..a CORONA II & a CLUB II B....
After purchasing my accordions, I needed more information......SO....

By visiting GOOGLE I found :REYES ACCORDIONS and the rest...is history !
I visit allmost every day the Reyes Forum and beside of that, since then I got a very goodand friendly contact with our mutual friend Jesus "CHUCO"Segovia Sr.....
So...to be honest,my friends..I am very proud of the fact beeing one of the members at the REYES FORUM now....!

On a few ocassions I had been looking for a site that offered news on grupos de acordeon y bajo sexto to just scope out picures of everyones bajos. I did a google search on bajo sextos and ReyesAccordions.com always popped up. after a few days I finally clicked on the link and saw that it pertained to squeeze boxes. I logged on again and this time proceeded to check out the site thoroughly and realized it had a section for bajo sextos and included a forum on different topics. Everyone in this community was so helpful that I really enjoyed it and as they say the rest is history.

It was a year and a half ago that I found this site. I wanted to learn to play the accordion, but I didn't know anything about the instrument. I found it by accident doing research and thank god for stupid luck, because the site took me in the right direction. I not only bought an accordion thanks to the advice given. I also found someone to teach me to play in my home town area. I thank all of you because without you I wouldn't be playing today.

I was looking for DEARMOND 210 pickups, I had just got 2 new bajos from Guerrero and I did a search to find some and Gilbert's site popped up and he had 3 pickups on special for 150 each. I bought all 3. I think that was in 2001. I think i joined the forum a few months after Gilbert put it online. As you all know, this site is really helping to keep the music alive.
