Here's a demo of upcoming version 2.0 of my MIDI Melodeon app for iPad with CoreMIDI support. Supports both B/C and D/G style layouts. The port from the old DSMI interface was trivial, took less than an hour.

DSMI really isn't supported anymore so all future versions will be CoreMIDI based. I'll also be porting the Cyborg GCF three-row app to use CoreMIDI as well. Once I have a chance to test the new code on all the various iPad models, I'll submit the update to Apple.

I really need to move away from DSMI based wireless MIDI to CoreMIDI going forward. I can't even build a DSMI based version anymore.

I'd like to have the 2.0 version of Cyborg use only CoreMIDI, but I'm concerned that some of you who use the current DSMI based version would be upset.

That leaves me with a decision to make, either release 2.0 with only CoreMIDI support and no DSMI or release a completely new app Cyborg CoreMIDI and leave the old version as-is. Alternatively, I guess someone who wants to stick with the DSMI version could just not update to 2.0.

Any thoughts?

Loosing the native wireless MIDI transport is probably the only downside.  CoreMIDI is where it's at otherwise because of it's ubiquity and stability.  DSMI had it's issues though... I'm not sure what protocols it uses but it makes my router light up like a Christmas tree every time I would use it....probably uses Multicast to every port on the network I guess.

In my personal opinion, the wireless thing was cool, but a novelty.  If I'd use this for anything other than playing around, I'd like to have it wired up using CoreMIDI.

Would the app support MIDI through the Camera Connection kit (USB) for those apps that support it?  In other words would I still be able to trigger soft synths in a DAW?

OK, we're going CoreMIDI all the way!  It's just so much better in so many ways.  I just submitted the update to Apple this morning.

I've also changed the tablature display to use the same format as in the song tabs here on the site i.e. G1 C2 F3 (G1) (C2) (F3)

I've only been able to test the CoreMIDI functionality on the iRig MIDI dock interface I picked up at Guitar Center last week, so I can't say for sure about the functionality through the camera adapter. I'm just using standard CoreMIDI APIs so if other CoreMIDI apps work with those setups, I would expect mine would work as well.

If you're really attached to using DSMIDI-WiFi, then don't install the 2.0 update when it shows up on iTunes, you can just continue using version 1.1.

OK, here's a demo of the CoreMIDI version of Cyborg GCF:

The bass sound was distorted by my iPhone recording the video, but it gives the general idea...

I'm so excited I can hardly breathe. Just figured out that my new CoreMIDI enabled iPad music controller apps (accordion-based and others) like MIDI Melodeon, Cyborg, iJammer, and AirPipes can all control software synthesizers running in the background on the iPad. For example I'm using Cyborg to play patches in IK Multimedia  SampleTank and it just works. No need for external hardware. Awesome!

Sweet.... I was thinking of that as one of the first things that I would try.  I have SampleTank, and also Garageband.  This is indeed a super cool feature.

Thanks Michael.

I just spent the money to buy all the samples for SampleTank. It's freakin' amazing with Cyborg and the other apps.

I'll have time on Thursday night if not sooner to post some demo videos.

I just spent the time working on the app before release to make sure that the switching between SampleTank and Cyborg to change patches for a channel was fast and seamless, it's really quite cool.

Here's MIDI Melodeon playing the IK Multimedia SampleTank software synth app running in the background on the same iPad, no external hardware needed!

This is really cool!

I'll do a demo with Cyborg (the three-row version) and post it ASAP
