This one is easy!

Quality      = 5, It has a reputation to uphold

Sound       = 5+, Sets the standard

Design      = 5, Lots of years went into making the Macias as it is today.

Price         = 5, you get what you pay for. Only so many can be made in a given time period. This instrument is worth the price tag and the time that it takes to get it in your hands.

Customer Service = 5, they are a corner stone of modern conjunto

This is the standard in Bajo Sextos. I recently had an early Macias repaired. The Luthier called the Martin Macias’ a fine example of a quality American made instrument. You can’t really argue with that. He cleaned up my baby and she is healthy again.

See the attachment, That side of my Macias was recently repaired. More pictures to come once I get it back and string it up.

It is my opinion that Alberto Macias and his son George are doing a fine job of carrying on with the legacy of his father, Martin Macias. The craftsmanship of each handcrafted instrument that they produce is the benchmark that all others strive to duplicate or surpass. One draw back of doing things the old fashioned way is that they usually take a long time from when you get on their waiting list to when you actually hold your finished bajo. But then again on the positive side, your bajo will be made the time tested way, and will hold up to a lifetime of playing. Yes I do agree that other bajos may have lower "action" when it comes to playability. The secret to that is, when you go to San Antonio and custom order your bajo from these gentlemen, all you have to do is ask them to lower the strings as low as possible. I have a friend who has a "1974 Martin Macias" that he had refurbished by Alberto Macias (Martin's son). He had the neck slimmed down to where it is as thin as a guitar's, and the strings are so low, the bajo almost plays itself. I like the fact that the micas have a clean, smooth flowing design that always appear as fresh as the day they were originally conceived. They never come across as cheesy or overpowering. When it comes to sound, Macias' Bajo Sextos literally speak for themselves. Estos bajos se defienden con qualqier otro que le pongan. Yes I admit I might be a little biased since I own one made by Alberto Macias in 2000, but hey is it no wonder that people who know, have refered to them as the Stradivarius of bajo Sextos. I'll get off my soap box hear what others have to say.

The original Martin Macias standard that I inherited from my grandfather still earns 5's across the board without a doubt. I have ordered an Albert Macias double cutaway and I am confident that it will do the same!!

i have to agree with ranchstyle one thing that a macias bajo has is its unique sound ,when you plug in a macias bajo to an amp you dont even need it equalized ,one other thing is that macias uses raw aged wood the older the wood gets after building the bajo the sound will get even better,i have an original martin macias bajo and i had a new alberto macias bajo when i picked up the new one,macias told that sound quality would not be the same as the old one ,but with the wood aging process the sound quality would improve and with the years it would sound tremendous ,the older the better it just take time for the wood set.

I guess this what sets apart some bajo builders from Macias.  It takes 10 to 12 months for Macias to build a bajo.  This is not because they have a lot of orders but because of the lengthy process.  Other builders can finish one up in a month or so.  When I picked up my macias I noticed George would take out a bajo out of this back room they have and work on it for a bit then put it back.  He would grab another one and do something else to it and put it back.  The sound these bajos achieve is spectacular even when not using some fancy type wood.  This is due to the process they have perfected over 3 generations.  Some people may say this and that about other bajos but simply Macias Bajos have the best sound projection.

1958 Martin Macias Bajo Sexto

Date underneath sound hole. Missed it since it was very faint. Discovered it once pickup was removed.

No modifications, bajo in same condition as when it was made. Never have a vintage bajo refurbished or modified. Once this is done,
it loses its value.

(5) Quality – Incredible craftsmanship. Since this is 48 years old bajo, the wood has aged like vintage wine. Does not get out of tune. I will pick it up a week later and it is in perfect tune (incredible).

(5) Sound – Loud resonant tone. Because of the aged wood, the sound has an incredible sustain.

(5) Design – Standard design. I like the old style look.

(5) Price - Priceless

(5) Customer service provided – Excellent! Albert Macias and his son George are great people and excellent luthiers.

Click here for the history of Macias Bajo Sextos - Albert has in his hands my bajo made by his father.

Much has been said about vintage Macias guitars.  I would like to give 3rd generation George Macias a vote of confidence.  We recently visited George and his father Don Alberto at their shop.  George showed me around and we looked over several new guitars he is building as well as several vintage Macias and other makers' guitars he is refurbishing.  The impeccable sound remains the same and in some ways his craftsmanship exceeds his famous forefathers' in my opinion.  It is good to know this legacy continues to match the current high state of the art.

I HAVE THE PRIVILADGE OF OWNING A VINTAGE MACIAS I THINK FROM THE 70'S OR 60'S NOT SURE BUT I LOVE IT.. I ALWAYS WANTED A MACIAS SPECIFICALLY A VINTAGE ONE.  THIS BAJO SEXTO IS LOUD! ACOUSTICALLY OF COURSE,  THE ACTION IS KINDA HIGH BUT I DON'T WANT TO MODIFY IT BECAUSE I WANT TO KEEP IT JUST HOW MR. MARTIN MACIAS MADE IT.  I FIGURE HE MADE IT LIKE THAT FOR A REASON RIGHT?

5+++++  ALL AROUND.

I've always wanted to have a Macias bajo; which I've placed my order with George. I completly understand it takes time for him to build them. Once I get my bajo, I'll post my review which may be a little bias.

i own a vintage 1960's martin macias bajo sexto and give it a 5 all the way, they are just the best sounding, looking, playing bajo's out there. i also have a george macias bajo quinto on order and expect it to be just as good if not better than my martin macias, and george is an awsome person and is great to deal with.

                                     Macias = # 1 !!!!!

I would have to say Macias Bajos are the best bajos in the world. I have a George Macias and I give it a 10 in everything! The action is low the sound is loud and just full and rich. If you have the money and the time I would really recommend you get one.
